About Us

The Idea

Since a number of years a large number of Sri Lankan Buddhists in Germany have celebrated together the many Buddhist festivals. However there are only three Buddhist temples following Theravada Buddhism in Germany. These three places are located in Berlin, Frankfurt and Bonn. This makes it difficult for the many Buddhist followers, whether Sri Lankan or not, to completely follow and experience their Buddhist faith in all its aspects. So we decided to set up the "Sri Lankan Buddhist Cultural Society e.V.", here in North Rhein-Westphalia, with headquarters in Düsseldorf as a fourth place for the followers of Theravada Buddhism.

One should look for peace within oneself and not outside.

He who has found inner peace looks neither to seize nor to reject.

The association and its objectives

We are a non-profit organization based in Duesseldorf. Our primary goal is establishing a fourth temple in Germany. To achieve this goal we first need to acquire appropriate premises. Our membership fees and donations will aid us in fulfilling this aim by (hopefully) the middle of next year. With the acquisition of appropriate premises we would have fulfilled the most important step in providing the followers of Theravada Buddhism with a place of refuge.Till then we will continue to rent rooms for the upcoming festivals and celebrations.

In addition to constructing another temple in Duesseldorf, we would also try to spread Buddhism in Germany.
Buddhist teachings and wisdom of the enlightened Buddha are widely known in Germany. But only a very few know exactly what it has to do with them and how to incorporate it into their lives. That is what we want to change.
We would like to provide anyone interested, with the opportunity to experience Buddhist doctrines. We intend to bring Buddhism close to those who need it, through Buddhist culture-based festivals, such as the Wesak festival in May, on which the day of the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha is celebrated.

We look forward to the day on which we will welcome not only Sri Lankans but also members from other nationalities interested in Theravada Buddhism, to celebrate the many Buddhist festivals and rituals together.
Our aim is to pass on the teachings of the enlightened Buddha onto the next generation, so that these valuable doctrines do not get lost with time.
With your help and contributions this society will definitely achieve this goal.
