Wesak Poya Festival

With the Wesak Poya Festival (or Vesakh or Vesak) the highest Buddhist festival is celebrated in Buddhism. The Wesak festival honors the birth, enlightenment and death, and thus the subsequent entry into nothingness (Nirvana) of the enlightened Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama.

The festival is on the full moon of the fourth month of the lunisolar calendar, which usually corresponds to May or July of the solar calendar.

Traditionally the enlightened Buddha is honored by puja ceremonies on Wesak Poya.

In Sri Lanka finden anlässlich dieses Festes in den großen Städten Paraden statt, die jedes Jahr wieder aufs neue in großer Zahl besucht werden. In the big cities of Sri Lanka, in occasion of this festival parades are held, which are revisited each year anew in large numbers.

Also Wesak lanterns are traditionally crafted and positioned.

Everything is prepared festive.

The Buddhist flag is hoisted as a sign of communion among all Buddhists to this day.
